ART in the ATELIER
Private and small group art instruction taught by a professional artist inspired by the Reggio-Emilia approach.
Alex Schmidt is a Brooklyn-based artist whose passion for education extends across infinite mediums. She is the former Atelierista at TriBeCa Community School (2014-2016), has studied in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and founded Young Atelier in 2015. She has worked with hundreds of artists (ages 0-99) in art ateliers, apartments, playgrounds, senior centers, schools, theaters, and ceramic labs all over the city. Schmidt’s artistic practice (focused on sculpture, comedy, and social practice) is heavily inspired by the Reggio Emilia pedagogy, improv comedy, and a strong desire to change the world through creativity, service, and laughter.

Open-ended play
I encourage children to find their own artistic voice.
2s explore a water table full of found materials and a variety of liquid watercolor shades.
Exploration
Practice, patience, and process over product.
Fine motor skills
Repetition inspires confidence; confidence expands creativity.
Mixed-media projects
Children are encouraged to create work that combines unexpected artist’s materials. Like real artists, they create new and exciting work. Unlike most children’s programs that focus on cookie-cutter projects, Young Atelier encourages creativity and uniqueness.
Friendship
Deep, lasting friendships are made with those we create with together.
